Today, on the United States of America’s 243rd Independence Day, we think it befitting to take some time to read in its entirety and reflect upon Frederick Douglass’s now immortal speech “What to the Slave Is the Fourth of July?”

This is the only content I felt I needed to share yesterday as well — as a white U.S. citizen living outside the U.S. (in Berlin), I feel a tension between wanting to continue enjoying the traditions of my childhood related to this day (fireworks, picnics, community) but and this is a huge but. I don’t want to further nationalist propaganda. Reflections in progress! Thanks for sharing!
