An ongoing global project

Race Land Empire is a US history blog intended to create an accessible, creative, and rigorous intellectual environment in which communities interested in unsettling the master narratives of the Americas can generate new knowledge. Our goal is to explore the contradictions to which we are subject: we observe and study history yet live in and interpret it today; we investigate the nation-state yet our perspectives are global; many of us advance research within the university yet we strive to transcend its often exclusive boundaries. The blog was launched June 14, 2019, by a team of students and faculty at the Global History Center of the Freie Universität and the Humboldt-Universität in Berlin and the Stevanovich Institute on the Formation of Knowledge at the University of Chicago. We envision an ongoing global collaborative project that will encompass thinkers from within and beyond the academy, connecting schools, universities, and communities in an examination of a shared history of settler colonialism and in the production of narratives that will yield historical justice.
